And, okay, Fincher and Mara (and others) have made it clear their adaptation of Stieg Larsson's novel differs from Niels Arden Oplev's international smash. I love the original film trilogy -- although I feel like the first is the best in the series -- but is it rude to indicate that it's Fincher's version that makes me want to (finally) read the novels ahead of time?

The English-language film is directed by David Fincher based on an adapted screenplay by Steven Zaillian. In early 2010, producer Scott Rudin began developing the project under Columbia Pictures, though Paramount Pictures were considering an adaptation in September 2008, when Alfred A. Knopf published the novel for the United States market.

By April 2010, Fincher was attached as director. Shooting began in Stockholm, Sweden in September 2010. Jeff Cronenweth replaced original cinematographer Fredrik Bäckar after eight weeks. Principal photography moved to Zurich, Switzerland in early December 2010, before breaking for Christmas. Production resumed at the Sony Studios and Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, then returned to Sweden in the spring.[citation needed] In May 2011, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer became a co-financier, putting up 20% of the film's budget, and getting some international TV rights.

Fincher pledged before filming began that the movie would not soft-pedal the book's content, which included rape, torture, bigotry and murder, and that it would be a "hard R". The movie has since been given an R rating by the MPAA for "brutal violent content including rape and torture, strong sexuality, graphic nudity, and language". The film has been rated 18 in the United Kingdom for "strong sex and sexual violence" by the BBFC. Similarly the film has been classified MA 15+ in Australia for "strong sexual violence, themes, sex scenes and violence" by the OFLC.

The director of the original Swedish version of the film has been quoted as saying 'Why would they remake something when they can just go see the original?'.

War Horse

It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

War Horse is a 2011 British-American war drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and is intended for release in the United States on 25 December 2011 and in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2012.  It is based on both War Horse, a children's novel set during World War I, by British author Michael Morpurgo, first published in the United Kingdom in 1982, and the 2007 stage adaptation of the same name.

The cast includes David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, Tom Hiddleston, and Peter Mullan. Michael Morpurgo wrote the 1982 children's novel War Horse after meeting World War I veterans in the Devon village of Iddesleigh where he lived. One had been with the Devon Yeomanry, and was involved with horses; another veteran in his village, Captain Budgett, was with the cavalry and told Morpurgo how he had confided all his hopes and fears to his horse. Both told him of the horrific conditions and loss of life, human and animal, during the Great War. A third man remembered the army coming to the village to buy horses for the war effort: horses were used for cavalry, and as draught animals, pulling guns, ambulances and other vehicles. Morpurgo researched the subject further and learned that a million horses died on the British side; he extrapolated an overall figure of 10 million horse deaths on all sides. Of the million horses that were sent abroad from the UK, only 62,000 returned, the rest dying in the war or slaughtered in France for meat. The Great War had a massive and indelible impact on the male population of the UK: 886,000 men died, one in eight of those who went to war, and 2% of the entire country's population.

After observing a young boy with a stammer forming a fond relationship with and talking fluently to a horse at a farm run by Morpurgo's charity Farms for City Children, Morpurgo found a way to tell the story, through the horse and its relations with the various people it meets before and during the course of the war: a young Devon farmboy, a British cavalry officer, a German soldier, and an old Frenchman and his grand-daughter.

Morpurgo tried to adapt the book into a film screenplay, working over five years with Simon Channing-Williams, but in the end they had to admit defeat. The book was successfully adapted for a stage play by Nick Stafford in 2007. To work dramatically, the story could not be told solely through the viewpoint of the horse (as it was in the book), and so the film version with a screenplay by Richard Curtis and Lee Hall is based on the narrative approach of the stageplay more than that of the book. The Darkest Hour

The Darkest Hour is an upcoming 3D American science-fiction action horror film directed by Chris Gorak and produced by Timur Bekmambetov. The American-based production depicts an alien invasion in Russia and stars Olivia Thirlby and Emile Hirsch as young people caught in the invasion. The film has a release date scheduled for December 25, 2011 in the United States and Russia.

With a production budget of US$40 million, filming with 3D cameras began in Moscow on July 18, 2010. Production used resources from the Russian-based company Bazelevs, owned by Bekmambetov. Filming was temporarily suspended three weeks later due to the 2010 Russian wildfires affecting the city and its vicinity with its smog. By September 2010, filming had resumed, and it was announced that the release date would remain unchanged. As of April 7 though, the release date has changed to December 25, due to filming conflicts in Russia.

While the line for the Game of Thrones panel was wrapping around the entirety of San Diego, a select number of journalists were sequested away in the Hard Rock Hotel. What were we all doing in this room? The team behind THE DARKEST HOUR had gathered us all to see the world premiere of the trailer and learn more about the film. While this film wasn’t officially a part of Comic-Con, it was definitely the best thing I saw all weekend.

Inside the small suite, we saw exclusive production stills, the world premiere of the trailer, and heard about the creation of the film. Keep reading to learn what THE DARKEST HOUR is all about and why it outshined even THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

As an avid Comic-Con goer (6th year running!), the highlight has always been the movies that surprise you most. Last year, it was COWBOYS & ALIENS, even though THE AVENGERS were the bigger draw. This year, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN was arguably the only movie everyone seemed to be interested in, simply because THE AVENGERS bowed out this year. So while I expected SPIDER-MAN to pull out all the stops, the lesser known projects are the ones that stick with me longer. IN TIME showed promise with their first trailer in Hall H, but THE DARKEST HOUR blew me away with the details about the film and the selectively debuted trailer.

We Bought a Zoo

A single dad decides his family needs a fresh start, so he and his two children move to the most unlikely of places: a zoo. With the help of an eclectic staff, and with many misadventures along the way, the family works to return the dilapidated zoo to its former wonder and glory.

You’ve heard of a family moving out of the bustling city to the serenity of rural life before, but have you heard of one moving to an animal park? Probably not, but in We Bought a Zoo, a despondent Benjamin Mee, tired of spinning his tires in the proverbial mud and desperately looking to strengthen the strained ties with his children did just that with his family. It apparently worked, because 20th Century Fox picked up the rights to his book and the story is now their feel good movie for the Christmas season. The trailer below is standard fare, although I suspect it’ll still make some choke up.

We Bought a Zoo stars Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Elle Fanning, Patrick Fugit, Stephanie Szostak and John Michael Higgins.

Based on a true story, Benjamin Mee is a recently-widowed father who moves his family to a beautiful estate miles outside the city. The only catch is that the estate is also a dilapidated zoo replete with 200 animals, and the purchase of the home is conditional on the new owner keeping the zoo and its entire staff. The Mee family subsequently sets out to rebuild and refurbish the zoo to its former glory, making new friends along the way.

In the Land of Blood and Honey

In the Land of Blood and Honey is an upcoming film depicting a love story set against the background of the Bosnian War. It is also the first feature film and directorial debut of actress Angelina Jolie and stars Zana Marjanović, Goran Kostić, and Rade Šerbedžija. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 23, 2011

The film is set in Sarajevo and surrounding areas before and during the Bosnian War. Danijel (Goran Kostić), a soldier fighting for the Bosnian Serbs, re-encounters Ajla (Zana Marjanović), a Bosnian Muslim woman he was involved with before the war, and who is now a captive in the camp he oversees. Their once promising connection has become ambiguous as their motives have been changed by the conflict.

Plot Summary: Set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War that tore the Balkan region apart in the 1990s, "In the Land of Blood and Honey" tells the story of Danijel (Goran Kostić) and Ajla (Zana Marjanović), two people from different sides of a brutal ethnic conflict. Danijel, a soldier fighting for the Serbs, and Ajla, a Bosnian held captive in the camp he oversees, knew each other before the war, and could have found love with each other. But as the armed conflict takes hold of their lives, their relationship grows darker, their motives and connection to one another ambiguous, their allegiances uncertain. "In the Land of Blood and Honey" portrays the incredible emotional, moral and physical toll that the war exerts both on individuals and people as a whole, and the terrible consequences that stem from the lack of political will to intervene in a society stricken with conflict.

In July 2010 with the film already in pre-production, the producers approached the Serbian tycoon and media magnate Željko Mitrović over the usage of the sounds stages and studio sets owned by his Pink International Company's subsidiary Pink Films International in Šimanovci. However, he refused to do business with them, releasing a press statement: "Despite an opportunity to work with one of the most popular and most sought after actresses on the planet, which would've opened many doors in the movie business for our company, I've decided not to participate in this film in any way. I've held great affection and admiration for Angelina Jolie both as a person and as an artist, but unfortunately she's full of prejudice against the Serbs. I do not wish to be part of something that for the umpteenth time presents the Serbs as eternal bad guys

The film was shot in Budapest and Esztergom during October and November 2010. The cast were entirely local actors from the region, many who lived through the war. Jolie said she spoke with the cast about their experiences during the war and tried to incorporate them into the film. The film was also shot in two versions – one in English, the other in the local language.

Jolie explained the reason she wrote and directed the film was to rekindle attention for the survivors of a war that took place in recent history. In an interview with Christiane Amanpour Jolie said she felt a responsibility to learn about the conflict in great detail, adding, "This was, you know, the worst genocide since World War II in Europe ... What were we all doing? And did we do enough? And why do we not speak about this enough?"

During the shooting of the film, it was falsely reported that the story was about a Bosnian woman falling in love with her Serbian rapist, prompting protests from the Bosnian Women Victims of War association and the revocation of the filming permit. Jolie denied the rumors and presented the script to Bosnia's ministry of culture, which then quickly reinstated the permit

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

An adaptation of the Sept. 11-themed novel by Jonathan Safran Foer for Paramount and Warner Bros. with a script by Eric Roth (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). The story centers on Oskar Schell, a nine-year-old amateur inventor, jewelry designer, astrophysicist, tambourine player and pacifist, as he searches New York for the lock that matches a mysterious key left by his father when he was killed in the September 11 attacks.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is an upcoming 2011 American drama film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer, directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Eric Roth. It stars Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn, Max von Sydow, Viola Davis, John Goodman, Jeffrey Wright, and James Gandolfini.

Production took place in New York City. The film will have a limited release in the United States on December 25, 2011 with a wide release on January 20, 2012.

Daldry had hoped to have the film released around the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. A test screening took place in New York on September 25, 2011 to a positive reaction. Here is our first look at Antonio Banderas in Jean-Jacques Annaud's upcoming adaptation of Hans Reusch’s "The Great Thirst," which is being touted as the biggest Arab-backed film production of all time.

The epic tale will follow the '30's-set rivalry between two Emirs in Arabia just as oil is being discovered while a young dynamic leader begins to attempt uniting the various tribes of the desert kingdoms. The film sees Banderas will play Nessib, one of the two rival Emirs, Mark Strong as his counterpart Amar, Tahar Rahim as Strong's son Prince Auda, Freida Pinto as Banderas' daughter Princess Lallah, Riz Ahmed as Auda's half brother Dr. Ali and Liya Kebeda as a slave girl.

Menno Meyjes ("Empire Of The Sun," "Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade") scripted the adaptation outlined by Annaud and Alain Godard, with lensing still taking place. Having shot since October in Tunisia, where it was actually caught up the recent Jasmin Revolution, the production recently moved to Qatar where they will "shoot battles scenes for four weeks in the desert dunes of Mesaieed."

"I am delighted to have started filming in Qatar," producer Tarak Ben Ammar announced. "We are filming in some of the world's most stunning desert landscapes and that will help 'Black Gold' look even more spectacular. Also, filming here gives me the opportunity to support and encourage the Doha Film Institute's vision of building a sustainable film infrastructure in the country."

Pina

Pina is a 2011 German 3D dance film directed by Wim Wenders. The film premiered Out of Competition at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival. The trailer features the song "Lilies in the Valley" by Jun Miyake. The film has been selected as the German entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards.

During the preparation of the documentary about Pina Bausch, she died unexpectedly. Wim Wenders cancelled the film production, but the other dancers of Tanztheater Wuppertal convinced him to make the film anyway. It now shows these other dancers, talking about her and dancing in her honor, not just in the theater, but most of the time at various outdoor locations.

The film presents some of the most noted dance pieces by Pina Bausch in the Tanztheater ("dance theater") style; Bausch is a leading exponent of Tanztheater, and the film consists of her work, but she is rarely seen in the film, and died prior to the film coming out. The four pieces are titled Le sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring), Café Mueller (a café in the German town of Solingen, where Bausch grew up), Kontakthof, and Vollmond. These are complemented with interviews and further dance choreographies, which were shot in and around Wuppertal, Germany; the film has scenes showing the Wuppertal Schwebebahn, which is also one of the dance locations.

In the first piece, Le sacre du printemps, the dancers of the Tanztheater Wuppertal are moving about an unusual place – the stage is covered by a thick layer of peat, and light moves are impossible on this dance floor. This was intended, because in the ballet a chosen virgin is sacrificed to the god of spring. The following section, Café Mueller, describes a place where Pina often stayed when she was a child. In a simple setting consisting of some tables and chairs and doors, a small woman dressed in white is entering the café. Two more women, one of whom is obviously blind, appear. They hesitate to step further, as the tables and chairs are obstructing their way. Two men come around and try to remove these barriers. Eventually the blind woman and one of the men stand face to face. The second woman wraps her arms around the other men, but she slips. This part repeats and seems to remain in an infinite loop. The piece is about searching.

The next piece, Kontakthof, has dancers of different generations. It describes a situation in dance school at the beginning of 20th century. The piece consists of multiple performances with actors of different ages. The film merges this different performances to one scene, which shows the various abilities of the dancers. In the final piece, Vollmond, the whole stage is flooded. The scenery contains just one large rock and some chairs. At the end of the film, the actors face the audience on a small path with a brown coal mining region in the background to an open end.
