SANDUSKY -- A U.S. Coast Guard crew from Marblehead rescued two people Sunday afternoon after their boat capsized near Cedar Point Beach in Sandusky,.
According to the Coast Guard, it was notified of the accident at 4:30 p.m. when a relative of the couple called for help, saying they used their cell phone to let him know they were in trouble.
A boatcrew immediately launched from Marblehead and found the couple sitting on top of their capsized 17-foot catamaran in wetsuits and life jackets.
The Coast Guardsmen brought the man, 61, and his wife, 59, both from Sandusky, aboard and took them to Shelby Street Marina in Sandusky where they were met by emergency medical technicians.
EMTs evaluated and released the couple.
The Coast Guard recommends all mariners carry a VHF-FM marine radio at all times while underway to quickly alert authorities and other nearby boaters if an emergency arises.
While many boaters rely on cell phones for emergency communications on the water, VHF-FM radios are much more reliable in the marine environment and work in areas where cell phones sometimes don't.
When a mayday is broadcast over channel FM Channel 16, the international hailing and distress frequency, multiple response agencies and other nearby boaters can hear the distress call and offer immediate assistance.
